    Key Platform Concepts

A salary benchmark is a data point that represents what the market pays for a specific role, in a specific location, for a specific type of company. TalentUp’s benchmarks are built from a continuously updated database covering 650+ job roles in 200+ locations worldwide.

Salary data is expressed in percentiles (P10 to P90), which tell you where a salary falls within the market distribution:

  • P10 — Only 10% of professionals in this role/location earn less than this amount (very low end)
  • P50 — The market median; 50% earn more, 50% earn less
  • P75 — This salary is above 75% of the market (competitive / above average)
  • P90 — Only 10% of professionals earn more than this (top of market)
  • The Compa Ratio (Compensation Ratio) measures how an employee’s salary compares to the market median. A ratio of 1.00 means they are paid exactly at market median. Below 1.00 means below market; above 1.00 means above market. This is the primary metric used in Internal Pay Analysis to assess compensation health.

Company Settings are global filters that ensure every benchmark on the platform reflects your company’s actual peer group — your sector, company type, size, and funding stage. Setting these up correctly is the first step to getting meaningful benchmarks. They’re configured from the Dashboard and apply automatically to all searches.

TalentUp and the EU Pay Transparency Directive

The EU Pay Transparency Directive (2023/970) requires companies operating in EU member states to report on gender pay gaps, disclose salary information to employees, and demonstrate pay equity. TalentUp is specifically designed to help companies comply with these requirements by providing:

  • Gender pay gap calculations and visual reports
  • Pay-by-quartile breakdowns
  • Compa-ratio analysis across the workforce
  • Market benchmarking data to justify salary decisions
  • See Section 5: Implement Salary Transparency for a dedicated guide on using TalentUp for Pay Transparency compliance.
