Key Platform Concepts
Salary Benchmarking
A salary benchmark is a reference data point showing what the market pays for a specific role, in a specific location, for a specific type of company. TalentUp’s benchmarks are built from a continuously updated database covering 650+ job roles in 200+ locations worldwide.
Percentiles
Salary data is expressed in percentiles (P10 to P90), which show where a salary falls within the market distribution:
P10: only 10% of professionals in this role and location earn less than this amount (very low end of market)
P50: the market median; 50% earn more, 50% earn less. The standard reference for “competitive” pay
P75: this salary is above 75% of the market, reflecting above-average, talent-attracting pay
P90: only 10% of professionals earn more than this, representing the top of market
Your company’s compensation philosophy determines which percentile you target. Most organizations position between P50 and P75 depending on the role and talent market.
The Compa Ratio (Compensation Ratio) shows how an individual employee’s salary compares to the market median for their role and location. A ratio of 1.00 means they are paid exactly at market median. Below 1.00 means below market; above 1.00 means above market. This is the primary metric used in Internal Pay Analysis to assess your team’s compensation health at a glance.
Company Settings are global filters that ensure every benchmark reflects your company’s actual peer group: your sector, company type, size, and funding stage. Configuring these correctly is the first step to getting meaningful results. They apply automatically to all searches across the platform and can be updated at any time from the Dashboard.
