Mandatory benefits in Seoul
Paid leave in South Korea is a minimum of 11 days per year after one year of service, increasing to 15 days in the second and third years. One additional day is added every two years of service up to a maximum of 25 days.
There is no statutory sick leave entitlement in South Korea. Employers compensate employees undergoing medical treatment at 60% of their average wage.
Fathers are entitled to 10 days of paid paternity leave, increasing to 20 days from 23 February 2025. This leave must be used within 120 days following the birth.
Parents of children under eight can request up to one year of full-time or part-time childcare leave. From 23 February 2025, leave is extended to one and a half years for certain conditions.
Non-Resident Tax is a flat rate of 19.00% (20.90% inclusive of local income tax) for foreign employees with less than 5 years residency in Korea.
The standard workweek in South Korea is eight hours per day, 40 hours per week. Overtime is paid at 150% of the standard rate, increasing to 200% for night work. The maximum weekly work hours can be extended to 69 under certain conditions.
South Korea has 16 public holidays. Certain holidays when falling on a weekend are moved to the following working day as a day off in lieu.
Local Income SurTax rates are progressive: up to 14 million KRW (0.60%), 14 million to 50 million KRW (1.50%), 50 million to 88 million KRW (2.40%), 88 million to 150 million KRW (3.50%), 150 million to 300 million KRW (3.80%), 300 million to 500 million KRW (4.00%), 500 million to 1 billion KRW (4.20%), and 1 billion KRW and above (4.50%).
