Statutory Benefits

Mandatory benefits in C-C-Trinidad And Tobago
Foreign nationals must apply for a business visa before arrival unless exempt. Work permits may be granted for up to three years and require a Multiple-Entry Visa.
The standard working week consists of 40 hours per week, 8 hours per day. This should include a minimum of a 45 mins paid lunch break. Overtime compensation is regulated by Employment Contract/Collective Agreements.
The minimum wage is 17.50 TTD per hour.
Income tax is applicable for employees earning above $90,000 TTD per year. 25% up to 1 million TTD. 30% for 1 million TTD and above.
National Insurance Scheme (weekly contribution depending on the employee’s weekly earnings – The maximum rate is 414.30 TTD per week for monthly income over 13,600 TTD). Health Surcharge (maximum weekly contribution income over 470 TTD). Total Employee Cost: 11.90 TTD to 138.10 TTD + 8.25%.
Wages must be paid at least once a month.
National Insurance Scheme (weekly contribution dependent on the employee’s weekly earnings – The maximum rate is 414.30 TTD per week for monthly income over 13,600 TTD). Total Employer Cost: 23.80 TTD to 276.20 TTD.
Public holidays falling on weekends are usually moved to a weekday in lieu. There are approximately 15 public holidays per year.
Employees who have worked 220 days for one employer are generally entitled to 10 working days (2 weeks) of paid annual leave.
Employees are entitled to 2 weeks of paid sick leave once employed for more than 6 months. Sick leave of more than 3 days requires a medical certificate.
Pregnant employees are entitled to 14 weeks of paid maternity leave following one year of continuous service. Maternity leave can be extended by four to twelve additional weeks for pregnancy-related illnesses.
The termination process varies according to the employment agreement and collective agreement. Notice period is usually 1 month for both the employer and employee.
Probation periods are usually a minimum of 3 months with the ability to extend to 6 months.
Severance pay is required where termination is due to redundancy. The rate of severance pay depends on the employee’s length of service.
