Mandatory benefits in Québec
Employees are entitled to two consecutive weeks of vacation after the first year of employment and three weeks after five years. Vacation pay is 4% of the salary for the first five years and 6% thereafter.
Notice periods in Quebec are linked to the reason for termination and the employee’s length of service. Seven days’ notice is required for 3 months to 1 year of employment, 14 days for 1 to 5 years, four weeks for 5 to 10 years, and eight weeks for more than 10 years.
Employees are entitled to up to 17 weeks of maternity leave. Employment insurance provides 55% of earnings for 15 weeks, up to CAD650 a week.
Employers have 1 month to remit an employee’s first pay. Wages must be paid at regular intervals of no more than 16 days, or 1 month for managerial personnel. If payday falls on a statutory holiday, wages must be paid on the preceding working day.
Maximum working hours are 8 hours a day and 44 hours a week, with a maximum of 12 hours in a day including overtime. Industry-specific differences exist, such as 39 hours per week for the clothing industry.
There are 8 national holidays in Quebec. If a holiday falls on a weekend, it is observed on the preceding Friday or following Monday.
